For the nerds, Proteins are the organic macromolecules made up of linear chain of amino acids. Amino Acids, sounds alien? These are the molecules with the general formula H2NCHRCOOH. Got it :-) ? Any more questions bio enthusiasts? Anyway ,as an interesting fact amino acids are also used in industries, for the production of biodegradable plastics.Stop now don't start thinking about eating that plastic bag.
Functions of Protein:
Proteins are the building block of our body.
* Required for building and repair of body tissues (including muscle)
* Enzymes, hormones, and many immune molecules are proteins
* Essential body processes such as water balancing, nutrient transport, and muscle contractions require protein to function.
* Protein is a source of energy.
* Protein helps keep skin, hair, and nails healthy.
* Protein, like most other essential nutrients, is absolutely crucial for overall good health.
Dietary Requirement:
According to RDA males need to have 56 g/day and females 46 g/day of protein.
Protein Sources
Of the 20 amino acids used by humans in protein synthesis, 11 "nonessential" amino acids can be synthesized in sufficient quantities by the adult body, and are not required in the diet but the other 9 'essential' amino acids must come from the diet.
* Egg, large - 6 grams protein
* Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
* Cottage cheese (Paneer), ½ cup - 15 grams
* Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams
* Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz
